The view from the balcony of one of the Ovolo Penthouses. A great place to chill out.
One of the things we love to do as a family is stay in the CBD for a two or three nights. A city stay is a great way to see a few sights or see a show or have a great dinner in town without worrying about getting home.
We have stayed a few places around town but the best and our favourite is the Ovolo Laneway Apartments.
Located near Chinatown, on Little Bourke Street, the Ovolo apartments are close to lots of great places to eat as well as the Princess and Her Majesty’s Theaters and lots of other things to do.
Better than it’s location, though, is the great family friendly apartments. We’ve stayed at the Ovolo several times in different sized rooms and have found them all excellent for staying in with kids.
The fantastic layout of the Ovolo penthouse.
The smaller apartments are well laid out and make the most of the space available. We’ve been able to stay in the two bedroom apartments as a family of five without an issue. We’ve also treated ourselves to the penthouse, which was huge and can easily a family with lots of space to spare.
The rooms are well equipped with a great TV and an Apple TV plus other electronics. The beds are super comfortable and the fridge comes stocked with a free mini bar (with beer, wine, water, soft drinks and snacks included with the room). The apartments are nice and quiet as well as comfortable – making them a great place to hang out and relax.
The Ovolo Loot Bags: full of yummy free snacks. Part of the stuff all the rooms at Ovolo come with.
Perhaps our favourite part our stays are the breakfasts (which are included if you book an apartment through their website). The breakfast room has various bits and pieces of a continental breakfast which you can eat there or take back to your room. This works great for kids as they can pick what they want then take them back to the room and eat there.
The apartments each have a small kitchenette (the large penthouses have virtually a whole kitchen – oven included) with a microwave and some glasses, crockery and cutlery. This makes eating in or self catering easy. There’s several large convenience stores or small supermarkets nearby. A large supermarket is within a 10 minute walk away on Lonsdale Street.
There’s also a laundry with free machines – handy for longer stays.
To say we love staying here is an understatement. It’s a great place for short family city stays!
The Ovolo Laneway Apartments are located at 19 Little Bourke Street, Melbourne, at the eastern edge of the CBD. See https://www.ovolohotels.com.au/ovololaneways/ for more information, including room rates and vacancies.
Kid Friendly: Yes. There’s no dedicated kids facilities but this place does well. The rooms might be small but are well suited to kids. The lollies at reception are a nice touch.
Pram/Stoller access: Yes, you can push a pram to your room but everything is small scale so wide or double strollers are out.
Getting to the Ovolo Laneway Apartments
Located at the eastern edge of the CBD the Ovolo is very close to Parliament Station (all lines and most trains will go through) and a two minute walk from the Lonsdale Street and Bourke Street exits. The #86 tram and #96 tram both go very close as well. The hotel is just a couple of minutes walk north of the stop at the corner of Spring and Bourke Streets. The free City Circle tram (number 35) stops at this intersection as well. Any of the many trans going along Swanston Street will drop you off a 10 minute walk away (get off at the Bourke Street stop).
There’s very limited on street parking around. There is a few parking lots near by, however.
