It took me quite awhile to realise what a great attraction ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) is with kids. This interesting building in Federation Square has an excellent museum which is fun for everyone in the family.

ACMI Screen Worlds review

ACMI Screen World Melbourne

ACMI Screen World

The permanent exhibition at ACMI is called Screen Worlds and it is very interesting. Screen Worlds spans the 110 years of the moving image – through the early beginnings of film, the start of television, games, the internet and now the dominance of the digital age.

It does all this through screens, media and memorabilia. There are so many fun exhibits from cartoon flip books, to making your own shadow puppets on a big screen to spinning a big wheel full of creatures to give the impression that they are all moving.

It is very interactive with lots of colours, lights and sounds meaning that it will entertain even the youngest kids. There is a special kids’ area, but my young kids were happy everywhere. For big kids at heart, there are also lots of old school game consoles so it may be harder to drag the adults away from here than the kids!

I particularly liked the old reels showing the beginning of television shows in Australia, although the accents often made me grimace! The kids loved the time slice – they could run around in a small space while being filmed from every direction – we could then see a video similar to scenes in the Matrix.

There are also regular events at ACMI for kids as well as kids’ movies.

How to get to ACMI

Since ACMI is located at Federation Square, it could not be easier to get here. Leave the car at home and take a train to Flinders Street or a tram along Swanston Street/St Kilda Road or Flinders Street.

You can find more information about ACMI on their website. Entry to the museums discussed in this article is free. Other events may have charges associated with them.
